Three Kinds of Water

Dongjo Yoo selected three themes as elements from which he interprets the correlativity between nature and culture in 1990. Those are “From Where – Wind”, “Where – Earth”, and “To Where – Water”. He introduced those things by various means of installations. Since 1991, he has been showing the relationship between water and culture by video installations.

The installations through medium of water and image were begun in different ways from 2002. This work using materials such as water, ceramics, video, projector is “Three Kinds of Water”, which is installed and exhibited in two main modes. one is like this: Upside down shaped word “WATER” is projected on a wall. Then we can see the right formed “WATER” on the water filled in about 1,000 ceramics that are arranged on the floor contacted with the wall. The other is: The former is projected on the water-bowls directly. This time we can see the latter, right word “WATER” on the wall....

물을 주제로 한 유화백의 일련의 설치미술은 물의 의미와 본질에 대한 성찰과

아울러 생명의 문제 환경의 문제를 다루고 있으며 특히 세계 보편의 생태적인

관점에 서서 인류의 생존과 발전과의 긴밀한 관계를 논하고 있다 여기에는 당

연히 문명과 인위가 그 위대한 성취에도 불구하고 반자연 반생명의 역작용을

초래할 수 있음을 강력하게 어필하기 위해 물의 순수한 미학 의미를 재조명하

고 있다고 평가된다

그는 이같은 문제 의식을 확인하고 체현하기 위해 바이칼 호를 포함한 전 세계

각국의 대표적 호수를 찾아 직접 물 퍼포먼스 행하면서 물을 새로이 느끼고 호

흡하며 다양한 문명과 자연 속에서 몸으로 물을 접하고자 하였다 물론 그와 동

시에 현재로서의 일관된 물 보존을 외치는 목소리를 돌에 담아 문자로 새겨 호

심에 던져 넣음으로서 액막이 벽사 기원의 의미를 표하는 원초적 표상의 행동

을 결행해오고 있다

인간의 지혜 성스러움 혹은 예언과 예지란 특별한 것은 아니다 사물과 현상에

대한 진절한 소통과 체감을 얻고 이를 그대로 순수히 표현하고 말하는 것 그것

일 것이다 미술가들에게는 표현 속에 모든 사고와 삶의 전인적 내용들이 그대

로 드러나게 된다 누구의 삶인들 그렇지 않을까 만은 아마 일반 사람들과는 많

이 다르게 표현 방식에서 순수함과 맞대결한다는 점에서 변별되는 것일 것이다
